In 2004 and 2005, Egypt experienced several deadly terrorist attacks. They were carried out in busy toursit areas, so it is commendable to be vigilant when visiting these locations. The crime rate in Egypt is low. Incidents of violence are rare, but purse-snatching, pick-pocketing and petty theft do occur.

The religious courts concern themselves with personal status and marriage and the code depends on the religious beliefs of the person under scrutiny. Thus, there are three forms of family law in Egypt: Islamic, Christian, and secular (based on the French family laws).
