The Republic of Namibia is a southern African country. It borders Angola, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa. The area has since prehistoric times been inhabited by Bushmen and during the Middle Ages, it was settled by members of the Bantu tribe. In the 19th Century, Namibia was colonised and under control by Germany under the name South-West Africa. South Africa occupied present-day Namibia during World War I and annexed it unilaterally after World War II. In the second half of the 20th Century guerrilla war-fare was conducted by Namibian rebels against South Africa, but independence was first achieved in 1990.
