Education is compulsory for 10 years for Namibian pupils between the ages of 6 and 16. Primary school lasts for seven years and secondary school lasts for five years. English is the official language throughout the education system although local primary schools occasionally teach in regional languages. There are a number of international (mainly German) schools in the capital Windhoek.
