Medical support in the Windhoek area is quite good and most of the hospitals are of European standards, but private hospitals should be generally preferred. Malaria is not a large problem in Namibia although cases do occur. The average life expectancy for both men and women is 52 years. The main reason for this low life expectancy is AIDS, with surveys indicating that the prevalence of AIDS is rising faster in Namibia than in any other country in Africa. Another reason is a high mortality among newborns.
