Tunisia

The Tunisian Republic is situated in the north of Africa and borders Libya and Algeria. At the beginning of recorded history present day Tunisia was inhabited by Berber tribes, but was settled by the Phoenicians in the 10th Century BC.

In the 9th Century Carthage was built and in the following 500 years Carthage rose to become the dominant civilization in the Mediterranean. Carthage actively fought the rise of the Roman Empire and during the Second Punic War, a Carthaginian invasion led by Hannibal almost destroyed the Roman Empire. However, in the 2nd Century BC Carthage was conquered by Rome and became a Roman province. In the 7th Century the region was invaded by Arab Muslims. In the 16th Century the region became known as a refuge for pirates which prompted a Spanish invasion of several coastal cities, most of whom was later reconquered by the Ottoman Empire.

In 1880, France assumed control of Tunisia and made it a protectorate the following year. During World War II, Tunisia was the battleground for the desert battles between the German General Rommel and the British Field Marshal Montgomery. In the decade after the Second World War, Tunisia witnessed a series of uprising and guerrilla warfare against the French, which in 1956 resulted in full independence. Tunisia has since been a republic where the president is elected every five year, although usually without proper oppositions. There is though a strong underground opposition from Islamic Fundamentalists.
