China has a nationwide system of public education, which includes primary schools, middle schools (lower and upper) and universities. Nine years of education is compulsory for all Chinese students, although this has not yet been fully implemented in many rural areas. Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai as well as some other large cities have a multitude of good international schools.
