Languages in India

Hindi is widely spoken throughout India, although many regions and cities have their own independent language. Hindi is one of the largest languages in the world and is the native language of more than 330 million people. It belongs to the Indic family of languages which is a sub-group of the Indo-European group of languages.

Hindi first started to be used in writing during the 4th century AD. It was originally written with the Brahmi script but since the 11th century AD it has been written with the Devanāgarī alphabet. English is also widely spoken throughout India and often it is possible to hear mixtures of English and Hindi being spoken in the same sentences by Indian people speaking among themselves.
