Crime and legal system in Indonesia

The Indonesian legal system is complex. It is based on Roman-Dutch law, custom and Islamic law. It reflects the different governing structures that have been in place for the last 300 years.

Since 2002, a number of 'western targets' have been attacked by terrorists. Indonesia has a relatively high crime rate. Crimes of opportunity such as pick pocketing and theft occur throughout the country.
