Japan has a number of large industrial companies and still retains manufacturing plants, although the economy is shifting towards information and service industries. The Japanese economy is slowly recovering from the recession in the 90s and unemployment is relatively low. For most jobs, fluency in Japanese is required, but for those who do not speak Japanese, the greatest number of opportunities is in teaching English and freelance editing. These can be relatively well paid, and are also a way of getting experience prior to settling in Japan permanently. The alternative is to be transferred there by an international company.
