There are quite a few regional languages in Pakistan. However, the main official languages are Urdu and English although approximately half the populations declare Punjabi as their mother tongue. Punjabi is an Indo-European language and belongs to the Indo-Iranian family of languages. It has two different scripts, Shahmuki used in Pakistan and Gurmukhi used in India. Urdu is also an Indo-Iranian language and is a standardised register of Hindustani. Urdu is closely related to Hindi, but uses another script and is more heavily influenced by Arabic. English is widely spoken by well educated people in the major cities.
