Taiwan

Taiwan is a refuted island republic in East Asia. It is officially called The Republic of China, not to be confused with the mainland People’s Republic of China. The Republic of China was formed in 1912 and then encompassed most of mainland China. However, a Chinese civil war broke out between communists under the leadership of Mao Zedong and nationalist under Chiang Kai-shek and in 1949 the nationalists were evicted from mainland China. Since then they have only controlled Taiwan and surrounding islands. The communists were hindered by invading Taiwan by the intervention of the United States.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Taiwan began to develop into a prosperous, technology-oriented industrialized developed country, while maintaining an authoritarian, single-party government. Taiwan is not widely recognised as an independent country and is not a member of United Nations.
