Primary education in Belize is compulsory from the age 5 to 14 years. The school system is built like the British school system and takes 6 years from the age of 11 to 17 years. However, illiteracy is fairly high especially in the remote districts where up to 70% of the population can be illiterate. Belize has no widely recognised international schools, but has two universities.
