In Belize unemployment stands at around 12.9% which is high but fairly usual for a second world country. This can make it quite difficult for foreigners to find work, although service jobs in the tourist industry are an exception. There are two types of work permit applications: (i) Application for permission to employ a foreigner: Any foreign citizen who wishes to work in Belize MUST be a legal resident (have resided in Belize for at least six months). (ii) Application for Temporary Self-Employment: This category would apply to foreign investors, among others.
