Guatemala has one of the highest crime rates in Central America. Most foreigners living or travelling in Guatemala are not affected by crime. However, violent crime is on the rise in Guatemala and all residents and visitors should take appropriate precautions. Violent criminal activity has been a serious problem in much of Guatemala for years. The legal system in Guatemala follows the Roman-French system of civil codification. In the major cities there are some lawyers and attorneys who speak good English.
