Education is compulsory for Panamanian children from the ages of 7 to 15. There is six years of primary school, which is followed by two three-year cycles of secondary school. Primary school is free for all children. However, an excellent parallel private school system exists primarily in Panama City, including several international schools. There are several public and private universities, with the University of Panama as the largest and most famous. The University of Panama, located centrally in the capital, also offers good and cheap Spanish courses for foreigners.
