Austria remains largely free of terrorist incidents and has a low crime rate. Violent crimes are rare. However, crimes involving theft of personal property have increased in recent years. The Supreme Court is the final court of appeal for civil and criminal proceedings. There is no capital punishment. Judges are appointed for life and cannot be removed.
