Primary education in Austria lasts for four years. Secondary education includes two main types of schools based on a pupil's ability as determined by grades from the primary school: the Gymnasium for the more gifted children, who usually continue on to the universities after their exam and the Hauptschule which prepares pupils for vocational education. Austria has a relative wide choice of international schools, especially in Viena.
