German is a West Germanic language and belongs to the Indo-European group of languages. It is spoken by approximately 100 million native speakers (in Germany, Austria and Switzerland). German shares some common features with Dutch and the Scandinavians languages. English is widely understood in Austria, especially among the younger urban generation.
