Petty crimes including scams, pick pocketing and thefts are a serious problem in urban areas in Romania. Although violent crimes are less frequent, they do occur. The Romanian legal system is built on civil law and is based on French, Belgian, Italian and German models. Only a few lawyers and attorneys in Bucharest and other major cities speak good English.
