Health care in France

The French health care system is among the best in the world, if not the best - costs not considered. It is very modern and it does not seem to suffer from the overcrowding problem to the same extent as some other modern western health care systems. If you become a resident of France, the health care system is included in the state social security system as is health insurance.

For short time stays, the conditions depend on you country of origin: If you are citizen of one of EU/EEA countries and moving temporarily to France or looking for cover at the start of longer stay, you are automatically entitled to free basic health care in France due to reciprocal agreements among EU countries. Make sure you have your papers in order particularly the European Health Insurance Card. NOTE: Some changes have been made recently - undercutting these services. Make sure to check out your personal situation even if you are a EU-citizen. If you are not from the EU make sure you have e medical insurance that will cover you during your stay in France.
