France has a good infra-structure generally and a very good transport infra-structure. Most of the bigger cities, Paris included of course, have metro or tram systems. Prices are normal for continental Europe, a bit more expensive than south Europe and a bit cheaper than Northern Europe. Bus systems are extensive within and between cities, but are usually slower and not much cheaper than the extensive train system. The train system is really good, especially between all major cities where the famous TGV will often service passengers. A car will enable you to go off the beaten path and roads are very good. Car rentals abound. Historically water transportation on rivers in France was important. It is still possible to travel this way.
