Greek has the longest documented history, 3,500 years, of any language within the Indo-European group of languages. Greek is a language distinguished by an extraordinarily rich vocabulary. The grammar has come down through the ages fairly intact and it has been written in the Greek alphabet since around 800 BC. The younger generation is slowly getting to grasp with English, however, it is not widely understood outside the big cities except in holiday resorts.
