The literacy rate on Iceland is 100%, and it is, perhaps, the most literary of all nations, with the largest number of poets and the largest number of books published per capita. School is compulsory between seven and 16. There are both public and private universities on Iceland. The International School of Iceland offers an educational program from kindergarten through grade 7 for students of all nationalities. Its school year comprises two semesters extending from August 23 to January 14 and from January 15 to June 9.
