Italian is a Romance language and belongs to the Indo-European group of languages. Unlike most other Romance languages, Italian has retained the contrast between short and long consonants which existed in Latin. As in most Romance languages, stress is distinctive. Italian is closely related to Spanish. Many Italians still have a poor grasp on English, but more and more in the younger generation, especially in larger cities, can communicate in the language.
