Latvian belongs to the Baltic languages, which is part of the Indo-European group of languages. It is relatively closely related to Lithuanian, but the two languages are not mutually intelligible. It is written using a modified Latin alphabet. Older Latvians often speak Russian and some German, while the younger generation usually understands some English.
