Malta has a very low crime rate and most of the crime that does exist is non-violent petty crime. The Maltese legal system is based on British common law and Roman Civil law. It is essentially adversarial and is regulated by specified rules of procedure contained in the Criminal Code and in the Code of Organization and Civil Procedure.
