Both English and Maltese are officially languages in Malta. The latter belongs to the Semitic group of languages and is thought to a descendent of Maghrebi Arabic. Maltese is the only Semitic language that is written in the Latin alphabet in its standard form. There are only approximately half a million Maltese language speakers in the world.
