The Republic of Moldova is an Eastern European country bordering Romania and Ukraine. During the Roman Era, Moldova was part of Dacia. The region was strategically important due to its connection point between Asia and Europe and as a result Moldova was continuously invaded by the Huns, the Mongols and many other tribes.
During the Middle Ages, present day Moldova as well as parts of Romania and Ukraine comprised the Principality of Moldova. However, it became part of the Ottoman Empire during the 16th Century and 200 years later part of the Russian Empire. A year after the Russian Revolution in 1917, Moldova declared independence from Russia and instead joined Romania. However, as a consequence of World War II, Moldova was annexed by the Soviet Union and a russification (i.e. many Russians and Ukrainians settled there, while ethnic Romanians were deported) took place. In 1991 following in the wake of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Moldova declared independence.
