French is the only official language, but Italian, English, and the two local languages, Monégasque (a local variety of Ligurian) and Occitan, are also spoken. The literacy rate is 99%. The Monégasque language is expected to experience a revival in the near future following a recent decision to teach it to all children in Monaco's schools.
