Norway

The Kingdom of Norway is a Scandinavian country located in Northern Europe. It borders Russia, Finland and Sweden. Norway was populated more than 12,000 years, although it consisted of scattered small tribes until the expansion during the Viking Age in 900-1100 AD. Kings ruled over most of a unified Norway during and after the Viking Age until the population was almost halved by the Black Death in the 14th Century. Following that, Norway together with Denmark and Sweden formed the Kalmar Union, which was ruled by Danish royalty. In 1523, the Kalmar Union was dissolved as Sweden broke out. However, Norway remained in union with Denmark until 1814, where Denmark, as a consequence of defeat during the Napoleonic Wars, lost Norway to Sweden.

In 1905, Norway peacefully separated from Sweden and gained independence. Norway was neutral during World War I and tried to be neutral in World War II. However, after two months of heroic resistance to the numerical and technological superior German forces, the country was occupied in 1940. Norway was liberated by the allies following the end of World War II. Norway is a member of NATO.
