Education is compulsory in Norway for children between the age of 6 and 16. It starts with 7 years of elementary school, which is followed by 3 years of lower secondary school. Finally students wishing to pursue higher education first need to attend 3 years of upper secondary school. Norway has a relatively large number of international schools concentrated in the capital and the towns of the oil industry at the west coast.
