Expats, especially in Lisbon or Porto, may become targets of pickpockets and purse snatchers, particularly at popular tourist sites, restaurants, or on public transportation. The legal system in Portugal is based on civil law. Portuguese law traditionally built on French law, but has also major elements of German law incorporated.
