Primary education in Romania is compulsory and is divided into two main periods. It begins with four years of elementary school, which is followed by another 4 years of gymnasium. After the gymnasium comes either a few years of vocational training or 4 to 5 years in high school, upon which successful students can pursue a university degree. Romania has several international schools concentrated in Bucharest and other major cities and still has some German and Hungarian schools located in the northwestern part.
