The Most Serene Republic of San Marino is a very small European country in the Apennine Mountains, where it is completely surrounded by Italy. San Marino was founded in 321 AD by the Christian stonemasons. San Marino has, except for brief periods, remained independent ever since. In 1631 its independence was recognized by the pope. San Marino fought alongside Italy in World War I, but was neutral in World War II. San Marino is a member of the council of Europe and the United Nations.
