The United Kingdom has a relatively low crime rate and most of the crime is petty crimes. However, in larger cities and especially in London, there has been an increase in violent crimes in recent years. But most of it is gang related and restricted to certain areas and neighbourhoods. The legal system of the UK is separated into three distinct legal systems; English law and Northern Ireland law are based on common law principles and Scottish law is based mainly on civil law.
