English is a West Germanic language and part of the Indo-European group of languages. It is the dominant international language in communications, science, business, aviation, entertainment and diplomacy. Two regional Celtic languages also from the Indo-European group of languages are spoken in the U.K. Welsh in Wales and Gaelic in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Beyond some limited understanding of other European languages, the Brits are not known for their language skills.
