The legal system in Lebanon is based on a combination of Civil Law (French model) and Islamic and Ottoman legal principles. The crime rate in Lebanon is moderate, but both car theft and home break-ins occur. Violent crimes and sexual assaults are rare, although petty theft - such as pick pocketing and purse snatching - is common in crowded public areas. Police are responsive but often unable to effect a positive outcome.
