Education is compulsory for 8 years of elementary school for all Turkish children between age 6 and age 14. Elementary school is usually followed by 4-5 years of high school which can be either geared toward academic or vocational training. After successful completion of the academic high school and an entrance exam, students can continue their education at a university. There are several international schools in Turkey, although mainly concentrated in major urban areas.
