Turkish belongs to the Turkic language group, which again is a part of the Altaic language family. It is related to languages spoken in Siberia and Mongolia. Istanbul Turkish is established as the official standard language of Turkey, but a wide variety of dialects exists in Turkey. Turkish is written using a modified version of the Latin alphabet introduced in 1928 by Atatürk to replace the Arabic-based Ottoman Turkish alphabet. Among the younger urban generation and in tourist areas some English is spoken.
