Crime and legal system in New Zealand

New Zealand has a relatively low crime rate although it has risen in recent years. However, the crimes are usually non-violent and the most prevalent crimes are petty crimes such as theft. New Zealand’s legal system is based on British law. There is a hierarchy of courts hierarchy of courts: District Courts, the High Court, the Court of Appeal and finally the Supreme Court. New Zealand has special land legislations and land courts for the Maori.
