Education is compulsory in New Zealand for children between the age of 6 and 16. It begins with 6 years of primary school, followed by two years of middle school and finally by two or four years of secondary school. The longer educational path is taken for pupils wishing to continue on to university. Considering the size of the expat community, New Zealand has very few international schools. However, English is the standard teaching language throughout the education system.
