Portuguese is a Romance language and part of the Indo-European group of languages, which was spread through the world in the 15th and 16th Century as Portugal established a commercial and colonial empire. It is today spoken in Portugal, Brazil, Angola and Mozambique as well as some smaller islands. English is spoken by some young people and professionals in the major cities.
