Primary education in Paraguay is free and compulsory, except in some rural areas, for children between the age of 7 and 14. This is followed by secondary education, which is divided into two phases of three years each. Slightly less than half of all students continue to secondary education and of those about an eight pursue a university degree. There are a few international schools in Asuncion.
