Crime in Paraguay has been on the rise in the past years, especially crimes targeted at foreigners and other people perceived as wealthy. However, most crime remains non-violent. The legal system in Paraguay is based on Roman law and relies on French and Argentine codes. The judicial system remains relatively inefficient and has insufficient resources. Few lawyers and barristers speak English and none outside the capital.
