Spanish expat enclaves put strain on health services

One on the not so great things about expatriate living is the tendency to cluster together in what could be described as "expat ghettos". This is actually one of the insights that made Thomas and me build Globe Dweller. We want expats to integrate better into their host country and not isolate themselves from it in small cells.

Alicante in Spain is experiencing one of the negative effects of expats isolating themselves in colonies instead of distributing themselves more evenly across the country.

In Alicante non-Spanish EU nationals account for between 15 and 20 per cent of all hospital admissions.

There will be many challenges in the coming years in Europe as individuals are free to move, work and retire. Globally more and more free agents, professional migrants and expats are forcing a rethinking of health care services and insurance.
